Our big boy!

The 4-month numbers are in!

Height = 24.75" (about 50th percentile)
Weight = 15 lbs (just under the 50th percentile)
(and I totally won the bet, with him coming in at exactly 15 lbs!)

Our little monkey is getting so big!

Waiting patiently for his doctor!

Another summary of Eli's doctor appts Weeks 3-16

Eli is actually a very healthy baby.  He eats well, hardly spits up, only cries when he is hungry or over tired.  Never ran a fever or been sick.  Despite this, we've been to visit the doctors quite often!

After the excitement of the first 2 weeks of weigh-ins and ER visits, we avoided the pediatrician's for a whole 2 weeks and only went in for his 1-month check-up.  He did pretty well and weighed in at 8 lbs, 8 oz.!  We were all pretty excited about this.  He was still "small" (20th percentile), but at least he had gained weight.  At this appt, the doctor signed us up for another kidney ultrasound, just to keep an eye on his left kidney.

During his second month of life, Eli had his second kidney ultrasound and then his 2-month doctor appointment.  Turns out he officially has Renal Hydronephrosis, which basically means that the left kidney is slightly enlarged where it connects to the tube that carries urine to the bladder.  This likely means some fluid is building up there.  This wasn't noticed during the many, many prenatal ultrasounds that we had, and seems to be minor.  We have since gone to see a pediatric urologist and she doesn't seem too concerned yet.  He'll have another ultrasound when he's about 6 months old.  It will likely correct itself and everything should be OK.

Eli's regular two-month appointment went well -- weighing in at 10 lbs 15 oz!  Yes -- he gained over 2 lbs in a month!  He also had to get 5 immunizations!  This meant 4 shots in the legs.  He did pretty well (I surely cried more than he did).  And even seemed fine when we got home.  We gave him some Tylenol, he slept, he ate, he was generally happy.  Then we made the mistake of thinking he was fine and taking him to go visit his Uncle Luke and Aunt Natalia.  Biggest mommy mistake I have made!!  As soon as he woke up at their place, he was a mess.  I have never heard him cry due to pain before.  By the end of an hour, he and I were both crying and we had to head home (Luckily, Luke and Natalia were very understanding about the whole thing!)!

As I said, the pediatrician also sent us to a urologist.  Eli had the kidney issue, but the doctor also suspected that he may be developing a hernia on his left side too.  Ryan may have had this as a baby and my nephew did too (actually requiring surgery), so we decided we should probably go check it out.  Surprisingly, I actually really like the urologist (a rarity for me to like a doctor!)! She took her time with him, wasn't in a rush, explained things thoroughly but not like I was an idiot, and really examined Eli and pulled up his ultrasound results and went through all of those too.  We're going to have Eli checked again for everything at 6 months.  The kidney is swollen, but may correct itself and his hernia is likely only fluid and may also just correct itself.

While I still feel like this is a lot of doctor appointments for the poor guy, I am grateful that he is doing so well and has lots of doctors looking out for him!

Dr appt Week 2 AB & Week 6 AB

Since I always updated on the pregnancy doctor's appointments, I figured I should continue and talk about my appointments after baby (AB).

2 weeks after baby, I had an appointment with my OB to check on my incision and my blood pressure (as it was so high the day we got sent to have the baby).  Ryan and Eli came along, as I wasn't supposed to be driving yet.  I met with the doctor that had done the c-section and my blood pressure was fine and the incision was healing nicely.  I also tried talking to her about the issues I was having with breast feeding.  At this point, Eli would latch on great and suckle, but his doctor was concerned about his lack of weight gain, so the pediatrician wanted us to focus more on getting him to eat formula.  We had been giving him formula, because my milk supply was definitely low.  My milk didn't come in until 6 days after Eli was born and I was pumping every 2 or 3 hours to produce just 1/2 oz per day.  Surely not enough for a growing baby!  My doctor basically said "Sometimes breastfeeding just doesn't happen for everyone" and "Keep on trying, if you want".  Disappointing, but I did keep trying!

6 weeks after baby, I had another appointment and this time I met with the PA.  In the past, I have liked meeting with this PA because she is pretty straight forward about things.  But she was the one who was freaking out and therefore freaking me out at our 37 week appointment.  So I just had some underlying bad feelings about her and didn't feel like seeing her, but I didn't really have a choice.  To add to my already not-happy mood, I had Eli with me.  Not that Eli put me in a bad mood, but Ryan was back at work, so I was alone with Eli.  And he was so great in the waiting room ... for an hour and a half!!  Then he started to get cranky when we got into the exam room because he was hungry (and my kid is never just hungry, he is STARVING!).  If I had actually been seen at the time of my appointment, we would have been home by then (as I had planned!!).  And of course, as I am rushing to get him a bottle, the PA comes in and makes some remark about my crying baby.  Grr.  So I try to settle him down as the PA gets more annoyed because she wants to rush through my appointment!  She very quickly rushes to check my incision (as I am still standing up, holding a baby!) and I try to talk to her about my continued breastfeeding issues, when she again flips out about my high blood pressure.

"Have you seen your regular doctor about this high blood pressure?", she demands.  Umm ... no.  I never had high blood pressure before the day I was sent to the hospital to have the baby.  At my Week 2 AB appointment, my blood pressure was fine.  But, again at this appointment, it was high.  The PA takes my BP over and over and even threatens to send me to the hospital because it is so high.

All I wanted to do was yell: "High BP???  Really???  Maybe it's because you kept me and my 6-week-old baby waiting for more than an hour, and now my kid is screaming because he is starving, and you won't let me finish feeding him because you are crazy because you've been running late all day and now you are yelling at me about my high blood pressure and I would like to talk to you about other things which you are ignoring!!!!!"  But I figured that wouldn't help at all.  So, I didn't yell.

Finally, she was convinced that my BP wasn't so high that I would die and then Ryan would sue her, and she let me go home with a referral to see another doctor to figure out what was going on.  She also cleared me for work and "exercise" and told me to come back in a month for my next check-up.  I really hope the doctor is in that day and I can avoid this PA!

Never a dull moment!

A quick summary of Eli's early Dr appt Weeks 1 & 2 and a trip to the ER!

As with most babies, Eli's first trip out of the house was to see his pediatrician.

(On a side note, getting him a pediatrician was one of the things I had planned to do after Christmas.  Because he came early, we were forced to choose a doctor for Eli before we left the hospital, so we went with the practice recommended by my OB that is just down the street from us.  There are two men in the practice, an older guy and a younger guy.  It's a rule that babies must have a doctor appointment scheduled before they can be released from the hospital, so we figured we'd go see these guys and then we could switch if we didn't like them.  So far, they are OK.  And close to us, so I think we will stick with them for now.)

At 6 days old, we headed out to see the doctors.  Our main concern was Eli's weight, as he had dropped from 7lbs 1 ounce at birth, to 6 lbs 5oz and then up to 6 lbs 7oz when we left the hospital.

Eli's first trip to the doctor!

Learning at an early age that doctor's
appts always involved a long wait!
After being weighed, we found that Eli had only gained 1 ounce or so.  He looked otherwise healthy, but there was concern with the lack of weight gain.  So we were asked to try harder to fatten him up and come back 4 days later (Tuesday).

I should point out that during this time, I was struggling with breast feeding.  I had very much hoped to feed Eli breast milk for as long as I could.  But I just wasn't producing.  It was heartbreaking to be unable to supply my baby with food.  I'll save the details of this for another post, but, long story short, Eli began drinking almost exclusively baby formula and just 1/2 ounce of my breast milk each day.  We all hoped that the formula would help him gain weight.

After the New Year's Weekend, we headed back to see the doctors for a quick weight check.
Snuggling with Mommy,
waiting to be weighed.
We were all very happy that he had gone up a few ounces, but they still wanted to weigh him again the next week, just to be sure he was continuing to gain.  They also wanted another billirubin test, because they feared he was slightly jaundiced.  For this, we had to go across the street to the hospital.  Luckily, the blood was collected quickly and the results were fine.

Then we had even more health excitement with Eli.

Saturday morning, on his two-week-iversary, Eli woke up with some yellowish gunk in the corner of his left eye.  I wiped it away and didn't think about it ... until a few minutes later, when I had to wipe more away ... and then more ... and his eye just kept getting more red and more gunky and more swollen.  Around noon, I forced Ryan to call the doctor's answering service (because, of course, it was Saturday).  The doctor called right back and prescribed a gel-antibiotic that we needed to put in his eye.  Ryan went out to the pharmacy and in the late afternoon, we finally got the gel to put in his eye.

At this point, his eye was so swollen, it would not open.  Thankfully, Eli was sleeping right through most of this!  He didn't seem to be bothered ... until we tried to pry open his eye.  Ryan and I took turns trying to hold him and keep his head still while the other person tried to get his eye open and get the medicine in.

It took a while, but we did eventually get it open a bit ... and that's when all this yellow goop just poured out of his eye.  It was like a horror movie!!!!  My two-week-old son's eye was oozing thick yellow fluid!!!

After a few tears (mine), we called the doctor back and he assured Ryan that our decision to take Eli to the ER was probably a good idea.  It was Saturday, so the doctors would not be at their office until Monday morning.

I cannot even describe the misery of the ER.  For 5 hours, Ryan and I sat with Eli and waited.  Surrounded by super-sick people and crazies.  Eli did not seem phased, waking only to eat.  Finally, we were called back to a bed, where we waited another hour.  After the 6 hours, a nurse came in, gave Eli a quick look and said "oh god!" and finally got us a doctor.  She basically yelled at us and couldn't believe that we couldn't deal with this on our own.  She said one of us should hold him while the other put the antibiotics into his eye.  Then it took the doctor, a nurse, me and Ryan to all hold down Eli while the doctor drained his eye and tried to get the antibiotics in.  I am not sure how Ryan and I were supposed to do it on our own if she couldn't handle our 2-week old!

His infected eye, the day after the ER
We had another weigh-in appointment scheduled for Tuesday, so we waited until then to see the doctor.  Happily, the eye was much better and Eli had gained a bunch of weight!  I think he was at about 7lbs 5oz at that point.  This made everyone very happy!

And then, the doctor said "Did you get the ultrasound done yet?"

"Umm ... what ultrasound?"

The doctor had seen a tiny "skin tag" on Eli's right ear.  In babies, this is very rarely linked to kidney issues (because the ears and kidneys develop at the same time in utero).  And so we headed back across the street to the hospital to get an ultrasound of his bladder and kidneys.  The wait was ridiculous, so we went home and tried again at 6:30am the next day.  Eli was a trooper and was so good for the technician.  The technician took quite a while to look at everything and we watched as Eli peed his diaper and we saw all of the pee leave his bladder!  Crazy stuff.

Eventually we found out that Eli does seem to have a slight kidney issue, but no one seems too concerned and we are scheduled for another ultrasound soon to keep monitoring things.

It was a crazy first month of "health issues" for an actually very healthy baby.  We appreciate the doctors being thorough, but I am hoping Eli won't have too many more visits to the hospital or pediatricians other than the regularly scheduled ones!

Dr appts Week 37

Obviously, Baby Wynne has arrived!

How did this happen?  It all started at my final doctor's appointment ....

Last week, I was finally done with work and Ryan and I had enjoyed one day off together!  Ryan then went with me to my now weekly doctor's appointment.

It was Friday, December 23rd and our plan was to go to the quick appointment and then do some grocery shopping, because my family was coming to visit for Christmas weekend and then Ryan's family was coming to visit!

We went to the OB, went into the office, got weighed, and got my blood pressure taken .... which is when the crazy began!

I had a high blood pressure reading, so the nurse called in the Physician's Assistance.  She basically pulled me off the examining table into a chair to test it again.  And then called in the Doctor, who got me back to the table to lie down and test my blood pressure again.  Obviously, this craze did so much to decrease my blood pressure!

Then the doctor and PA agree, I need to go across the street to hospital.  Ryan asks "Will they give her some medication?" and the PA says, "No, you're having a baby!"

WHAT?!?!?

Total shock.

While I understand that high blood pressure (when I usually do not have high blood pressure) during pregnancy is a sign of preeclampsia (which is totally dangerous for mom and baby), I just couldn't comprehend what was happening!

"You're having a baby" was not at all what I expected to hear.

And so .... they wanted to send us to the hospital ... but all the beds were full (why is this sounding more and more like a Nativity story?) ... so they sent us home for a bit ...

And that's how we found out Baby Wynne would be arriving soon!

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy's Weight Gain: 0 lbs (6lbs total)
Cervix: Not dilated or effaced at all!
Baby's Heartrate: Did not check!
Baby's Estimated Weight: Did not check!

Dr appts Week 36

Two doctor appointments in one day.  Sigh.

The early morning appointment was with the perinataologist.  These are my favorite!  This is when we get to see Baby Wynne (of course, the whole point is to measure size, not have a photo shoot, but we enjoy the viewing much more than the measuring!).  Ryan was even able to come with me!

We watched Baby Wynne for a good 20 minutes while the tech took measurements and printed out some photos for us (the best ones are below).  Baby Wynne mostly slept during the ultrasound, despite being awake all morning up till that point.  As usual, he/she was a bit stubborn and faced away from us (toward my back) for most of our show, but then gave us a glimpse of the face near the end.

The tech was able to get a lot of good measurements and let us guess an estimated weight.  At first, I said 20lbs (because I am feeling like poor Baby Wynne is squished in there!) and then I seriously guess 7lbs -- and was right on!  Based mainly on measurements of Baby Wynne's belly and head, the tech is pretty confident that she/he weighs 7lbs.  This is given with a +/- 1lb differential (meaning the baby could really weigh 6lbs or 8lbs), but the tech tried to convince us that she is usually right with her estimates.

So ... more than 3 weeks of growing left and Baby Wynne weighs 7lbs!!!

Based on these measurements, if Baby Wynne doesn't come on her/his own, it is likely we will be induced before the official due date (of January 11th).

On to the second appointment of the day, this time with my regular OB.  As always, it was busy and I waited for a while, then got shoved into a tiny little ultrasound room for the whole appointment.  They did the typical measurements (heartrate, blood pressure, my weight, etc) and then had to do a few other tests that are standard at 36 weeks.  They did an internal exam to swab for Group B Step bacteria (which will be treated with antibiotics if it comes back positive) and took some blood.  The also checked Baby Wynne's position (head down!) and my cervix (good times!).  The doctor also confirmed that it is unlikely they will let us go until the official due date since Baby Wynne is measuring so big right now.

I will now be going weekly to the OB to get checked right up until Baby Wynne arrives!

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy's Weight Gain: +2 lbs (6lbs total)
Cervix: Not dilate or effaced at all yet!
Baby's Heartrate: 165 bpm (in the morning) and 130bpm (in the afternoon)
Baby's Estimated Weight: 7lbs (82nd percentile)

More weird 4D ultrasounds ... but Baby Wynne is just so cute!  Week 36

Week 36, 4D cute little face

A more traditional ultrasounds shot of the left side of the face and some little hands!
Apparently Baby Wynne has a full head of hair!!

Dr appt Week 35 -- virtual edition

Another email/phone call "appointment" with my GD dietitian.

During this 2-week span, I have noticed that my glucose levels have gone up a bit.  Not much (still below the "threshold" most of the time), but consistently higher.  I haven't changed my diet at all, so I was slightly concerned.

Now that we're getting so much further along, I have found sleeping to be a little more difficult.  I do go to the bathroom pretty often, but I also struggle falling asleep because it's just hard to get comfortable.  Also, with the last weeks of work, I am still up at 5:30am, regardless of how little sleep I get!

This reduction in sleep apparently may be one reason why my glucose levels went up.  Sleep = good!  :)

Also, I guess it's not uncommon for insulin resistance (which is what GD is) to increase as the pregnancy goes on.  We only have a month left, so the insulin resistance may continue to increase as the baby grows and I put on another couple pounds!

The dietitian was full of assurances that this is all normal and I shouldn't worry.  She suggested a bit more walking around and more sleep!  Nap time sounds great to me!  :)

Two more (real) doctor appointments this week ... and then at least one appointment a week until Baby Wynne arrives!  We're really getting close now!

December 2, 2011

Dr appt Week 34

Another (surprisingly quick) appointment with my normal OB.  I actually met with the doctor this time and not just the PA.  It was especially quiet at the office today, so she wasn't even as rush and frazzled as they usually are at my practice!

Just the same old stuff ... weight, urine, blood pressure, heartrate.  Nothing exciting -- which I am happy with!

Next appointments are in 2 weeks (yay!)!

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy's Weight Gain: 0 lbs (4 lbs total)
Baby's Heartrate: 145 bpm

Dr appt Week 33 -- virtual edition

As part of the GD, I am supposed to meet with a diabetes nurse and dietitian.  I met with the dietitian during my Week 31 appointment (for less than 10 minutes) and we agreed that there was no need for me to come in again as long as I emailed my weekly logs of diet and glucose readings (yay!).

This morning I sent off the last 2 weeks of data to the dietitian and nurse for them to check over.

The reply:
"keep up the good work!"

I hope that all continues to go well with the GD over the last weeks of the pregnancy.

I also hope that my insurance company and I were not billed for this "appointment".

Dr appt Week 33

Another visit with the perinatalogist.  We go to this specialist to get ultrasound measurements of Baby Wynne to be sure that the Gestational Diabetes (GD) is not affecting growth (some GD babies get too big, which can cause problems).

This is truthfully my favorite doctor to visit because we get to watch Baby Wynne on a big TV screen for 20-30 minutes while the ultrasound technician tries to get measurements of our stubborn baby (who doesn't like to turn at the correct angle for the majority of the measurements needed!).

I was also happy that Ryan was able to make it to this appointment and enjoy the show.  The techs always love when Ryan is there to ask questions!  And Ryan kept asking for photos so this tech printed out so many for us!

All is great with Baby Wynne!  Everything looked good and she/he is not too big yet.  The tech predicts that Baby Wynne will be a bit over 8lbs if she/he arrives full-term.  This is a bit larger than average, but totally what I expected given family history.  The doctor was happy with the measurements and with how I am managing my GD diet.

We go back for another appointment during Week 36 (which may be the last with the specialist before Baby Wynne shows up!).

MEASUREMENTS:
Baby's Heartrate: 150 bpm
Baby's Estimated Weight: 5lbs 4oz (60th percentile)
Side view ultrasound of Baby Wynne's face!  Week 33

Creepy 4D ultrasound of left eye and part of right hand (and umbilical cord?)

Creepy 4D ultrasound of left eye and part of right arm

Still a bit creepy, but cutest 4D sonogram of Baby Wynne, with cute left eye and cute little nose!

November 18, 2011

Dr appt Week 32

A surprising doctor's visit -- because I actually got in and out in less than 30 minutes!  A first!

Just the typical stuff ... questions, blood pressure, weight, baby's heart rate.  A few follow-up questions about the GD.   Nothing exciting.  They all seemed impressed with the lack of complaints and the lack of issues (no swelling, no contractions, no problems with GD).

I will now be at the doctor's every 2 weeks  (plus all of my GD check-ups), so we're getting close to the end!

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy's Weight Gain: -2 lbs (4 lbs total)
Baby's Heartrate: 150bpm

November 17, 2011

Dr appts Week 31

The pregnancy has been great, so I really can't complain.  But in Week 29 I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes (GD).  I was not surprised, as I had a few risk factors (overweight, runs in my family), but still disappointed.  I feel totally fine, but it is a worry and I must now be monitored to make sure Baby Wynne is fine.

This monitoring involves a lot of doctors and in the last week, I have been to two appointments: one with a diabetes nurse and one with a nutritionist.  Both are at a hospital about 25 minutes from my house (and over an hour from work).

I met with the nurse first to get started testing the glucose level in my blood.  That whole finger pricking thing.  I was set-up with a food diary and I now write down everything I eat and test my glucose level an hour after every meal.  Easy stuff.  She explained it all to me ...very ... slowly.  Does she not realize she is asking a scientist to collect data??  Hello!  This is actually almost exciting for me!  :)

Basically, I need to avoid super sugary foods (cookies, ice cream, chocolate, candy, syrups, etc) and super refined carbs (think white bread and white pasta).  Seriously -- not a problem.  We don't really eat that stuff anyway.  I may be the only pregnant woman that does not crave ice cream.

So all week I wrote everything down and only had one "high" glucose reading.  I then emailed my food diary to the dietitian to review before my appointment with her.

I show up for my appointment (after leaving work early and driving through NYC traffic for 1.5 hours) and meet with the dietitian for about 8 minutes.  She basically says "good job" and sends me on my way.  Sigh.

The good news is that all is well and I can just continue on my current diet and Baby Wynne should be OK.  No medications and hopefully no more appointments with the nurse or dietitian (we are going to communicate via email and phone!).

No new Baby Wynne statistics for you, but I do have yet another appointment tomorrow.  And then another one next week with the perinatalogist to have another ultrasound and check Baby Wynne's size.
Seeing Baby Wynne will be a very nice Thanksgiving present for Ryan and me!

November 3, 2011

Dr appt Week 30

The only perk of being diagnosed with gestational diabetes is getting to go for a few extra ultrasounds and seeing Baby Wynne!

Today I got to see Baby Wynne for quite a while as the tech tried to get lots of measurements (she was even nice enough to tell me to close my eyes so I wouldn't see if it was a boy or girl!).  It's fun just watching Baby Wynne as she/he dances around.

When it came to a photo, Baby Wynne wasn't really cooperating.  Apparently, he/she is head down, back out, and snuggled up tight!  (We sort of got an over-the-shoulder shot, below)

The best news is -- Baby Wynne is right on track!  Not measuring big at all yet (which is the fear with gestational diabetes and the point of the extra ultrasounds).  This is great!  And we'll keep on checking Baby Wynne to monitor growth.  Next ultrasound -- 3 weeks!

MEASUREMENTS:
Baby's Heartrate: 150 bpm
Baby's Estimated Weight: 3lbs 9oz (60th percentile)

A very "artsy" view of Baby Wynne.
Essentially, Baby Wynne is turned away and this is the view of the back of the head, looking over the left shoulder.
Baby Wynne was just being shy today!

October 31, 2011

Dr appt Week 29

Another doctor's appointment, another long wait in the waiting room for a quick and rushed meeting with the doctor.

The worst part of the appointment was finding out that I have gestational diabetes.  Two weeks prior, I took the 1-hr glucose test, then got called in for a 3-hr glucose test (which are stories in themselves!).  Looking at the test results, I am just over the threshold for the level of glucose that should be in my blood.

Why am I not excited about this?
First, this can affect Baby Wynne (because he/she will make too much insulin as a result of the excess sugar in MY blood).  Usually this results in babies that grow bigger ... but their organs (specifically, the lungs) still develop at the normal rate.  So Baby Wynne might be a big baby that still needs to incubate!
Second, I can deal with the diet changes (less carbs ... I don't really eat sweets as it is), but just the thought of all the EXTRA doctors appointments are killing me already.  I hate doctors as it is and now I have to set up multiple appointments with multiple doctors/techs/nurses (and try to fit that all into a full-time work schedule, along with my normal OB appointments).  Oh well, I will try not to complain about it, because I love Baby Wynne.

What's the positive of it all?
We get a few more ultrasounds of Baby Wynne!  We need to check her/his growth a few more times, so it'll be great to see Baby Wynne!  If I get photos, I will be sure to share!

Next appointment is this week ... then probably next week ... then definitely the week after that ...

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy's Weight Gain: +3.5 lbs (6 lbs total)
Baby's Heartrate: 145bpm

Dr appt Week 26

I think I was supposed to go to the doctor's at Week 24, but we were out of town and the Fall semester work schedule is a bit more hectic than summer, so it ended up being Week 26 before I actually got in.  Oops.

Nothing exciting to report.  Just a quick 10-minute appointment (after an hour wait in the waiting rooms!!!!).

I mainly got yelled at for postponing my Glucose Tolerance Test (calm down people, it will get done next week!) and took some measurements and listened to Baby Wynne's heartbeat.  I also got a flu shot, which was good, because I wasn't sure if pregnant women could get a flu shot (and I work with college kids, which is almost worse than working at a day care when it comes to germs!).

Next appointment in 3 weeks!

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy's Weight Gain: +1.3 lbs (2.5 lbs total)
Baby's Heartrate: 140bpm

Dr appt Week 20

Today we had our 20 week doctor's appointment.  Everything went well!

We met first with the nurse, then the PA (who actually managed to find Baby Wynne's heartbeat this time!)

We then had our 20-week ultrasound, which is also known as the anatomy scan.  The technician (and her student) took lots of measurements and looked for all the body parts to be sure Baby Wynne was growing well.  I didn't get to see the screen most of the time (as I basically just lay there), but Ryan got to see it all!  The tech pointed out many brain parts (which Ryan kept shouting out!), the skull, lips, nose, heart, diaphragm, stomach, bladder, kidneys, femurs, spine, belly size, and lots of other stuff!  The save the best for last -- the "sex parts".  BUT, we don't want to know the sex!!!!  And it seems Baby Wynne didn't want us to know either because she/he kept his/her legs closed the whole time!  I am sure the tech got a glimpse, but she didn't dawdle, despite Ryan trying to get a peek!

Baby Wynne was sleepy during the ultrasound and didn't do much but yawn and some thumb sucking.  If we have another ultrasound, I will have to try to do it later in the day when Baby Wynne is a bit more active!

And here are all the pictures for week 20!

Profile of Baby Wynne
You can see the right arm as he/she attempts to suck her/his thumb!

Another profile of Baby Wynne

Yet another profile of Baby Wynne!

A (kind of creepy) view of Baby Wynne's face!
MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy's Weight Gain: +0.7 lbs (1.2 lbs total)
Daddy's Weight Gain: 5 lbs total
Baby's Heartrate: 137 bpm at first, then 148 bpm after being poked for a while
Baby's Estimated Weight: 15 oz. (55th percentile)

Dr appts Week 7, Week 12 and Week 16!

I plan to share the interesting information from our doctor's visits, and we've already had quite a few, so here's a summary of those first few weeks at the doctor's!

WEEK 7
Our first visit.  A new doctor, because my old doctor was near my work, which is 35 miles away and I plan to deliver at the nearby hospital, so I needed a nearby doctor.  This place is all women doctors, nurses, PAs, etc (not that I really care either way) and, of course, they are immediately taken with Ryan.  His effect on the ladies never ceases to amaze me!  I guess it is odd (in my neighborhood?) to have a very excited and attentive (and scientifically educated?) dad at the appointment.

Basically a bunch of paperwork, some peeing in some cups and a whole lot of vials of blood are collected.  Then we finally got to see Baby Wynne for the first time!  A blurry little ultrasound, but it was so cute!  With it's little heart beating!  The sonogram doesn't do it justice (see the left sidebar and our very first post).

Ryan and I are so excited and the conversation goes something like this (or at least this is how I remember it):
Ultrasound Tech: "That's your baby.  That flutter is the heart beat."
Ryan: "Oh, look, it is so cute.  Are those the armbuds? Are those bumps on the side the eyes? Is that the tail?"
Jen: "It looks like a chicken!"
Ultrasound Tech: [wide eyes; puzzled look]
(So sorry that, as a biology grad student TA, I have cut open a developing chicken egg and viewed a 3 day old chicken embryo!)

WEEK 7, Part 2: Nursing visit
Apparently it is standard to have a visit with just the nurse as a follow-up a few days/weeks after the initial appointment to go over blood work results and learn that drinking alcohol is bad for a developing baby.  Yet again, I think we shock the staff at the office.

(Again, all conversations are only as I remember them!)
Nurse: "Do you know your blood type?"
Jen: "AB+"
Nurse: [surprised tone] "umm, yes, you're right.  You are AB+.  Good job!"
Jen: [puzzled look]

a few minutes later ...

Nurse: "The blood work all looks good except for when it comes to german measles."
Ryan: "Oh, low antibody titers?  Can she get a booster at some point?"
Nurse: [shocked look]

After a long and tedious meeting, I get sent off for some more blood work and ultrasounds to check for genetic disorders and other not-so-good baby things.

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy Weight Gain: 0 lbs

WEEK 12:
A very busy day.  Two doctors visits.  One to my normal doctor and one to a special place that does super good ultrasounds to check for any issues.

The morning appointment to the normal doctor goes well.  Oh, except that the PA can't get a heartbeat using the little doppler thing.  Which is annoying (and sort of painful), but also awesome, because we get to do another ultrasound!  Here are some photos from that:

Again, the photos don't do it justice, but Baby Wynne was very excited to be seen!  There was dancing and a big wave at Daddy!  (It's a side view and the baby's head is to the left, obviously!)

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy Weight Gain: 0 lbs
Baby's Heart Beat: 150 bpm

The afternoon appointment was also fun!  Our ultrasound tech was super nice (and crazy ... glad to know her life story!)  but let us look at Baby Wynne for a long time!  And then she actually had to come back and take more pictures, so we got yet another chance to watch Baby Wynne!!  Yay!

Like I said, she was awesome and appreciated our nerdy scienceness.  We talked about the bones being ossified and what all the structures were that we were looking at and what exactly was going on.
I also learned 2 interesting things about this specific pregnancy:
(1) The egg came from my right ovary -- I know most mom's probably wouldn't care about this, but I thought it was cool that she could see the corpus luteum still in my ovary.
(2) The placenta is attached to the front of my uterus. -- This is one reason why finding the heartbeat is difficult with the little doppler thing.  This also makes ultrasounds interesting, because the go all around my belly.  Really high or really low is the only good way to get a good shot! (My bit of belly chub also doesn't help the situation)

Here are the awesome pictures:

Face
(Baby Wynne is now facing sideways, with the top of the head to the right)
Another side shot.  Definitely dancing again!

Here Baby Wynne is waving at you!  See the hand up near the top?

We also got the results of the first few tests for abnormalities and all is well!

WEEK 16
A pretty uneventful visit.  Ryan had to work, so I went alone.

Got back some more blood work we had done (serious number of tests for Baby Wynne!) and, again, all markers for abnormalities are negative, so it looks like Baby Wynne is doing great!

The doctor finally managed to get the heartbeat using the doppler thing.  It took a good 15 minutes and a lot of adjusting and a bunch of listening to my heartbeat (damn you, anterior placenta!), but she found it!  I was actually happy she found it and I didn't have to have an ultrasound because Ryan would have been so sad to have missed the chance to see Baby Wynne again!

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy's Weight Gain: +0.5lbs
Baby's Heart Rate: 150 bpm

And that sums up all the first doctor appointments!
