Dr appts Week 36

Two doctor appointments in one day.  Sigh.

The early morning appointment was with the perinataologist.  These are my favorite!  This is when we get to see Baby Wynne (of course, the whole point is to measure size, not have a photo shoot, but we enjoy the viewing much more than the measuring!).  Ryan was even able to come with me!

We watched Baby Wynne for a good 20 minutes while the tech took measurements and printed out some photos for us (the best ones are below).  Baby Wynne mostly slept during the ultrasound, despite being awake all morning up till that point.  As usual, he/she was a bit stubborn and faced away from us (toward my back) for most of our show, but then gave us a glimpse of the face near the end.

The tech was able to get a lot of good measurements and let us guess an estimated weight.  At first, I said 20lbs (because I am feeling like poor Baby Wynne is squished in there!) and then I seriously guess 7lbs -- and was right on!  Based mainly on measurements of Baby Wynne's belly and head, the tech is pretty confident that she/he weighs 7lbs.  This is given with a +/- 1lb differential (meaning the baby could really weigh 6lbs or 8lbs), but the tech tried to convince us that she is usually right with her estimates.

So ... more than 3 weeks of growing left and Baby Wynne weighs 7lbs!!!

Based on these measurements, if Baby Wynne doesn't come on her/his own, it is likely we will be induced before the official due date (of January 11th).

On to the second appointment of the day, this time with my regular OB.  As always, it was busy and I waited for a while, then got shoved into a tiny little ultrasound room for the whole appointment.  They did the typical measurements (heartrate, blood pressure, my weight, etc) and then had to do a few other tests that are standard at 36 weeks.  They did an internal exam to swab for Group B Step bacteria (which will be treated with antibiotics if it comes back positive) and took some blood.  The also checked Baby Wynne's position (head down!) and my cervix (good times!).  The doctor also confirmed that it is unlikely they will let us go until the official due date since Baby Wynne is measuring so big right now.

I will now be going weekly to the OB to get checked right up until Baby Wynne arrives!

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy's Weight Gain: +2 lbs (6lbs total)
Cervix: Not dilate or effaced at all yet!
Baby's Heartrate: 165 bpm (in the morning) and 130bpm (in the afternoon)
Baby's Estimated Weight: 7lbs (82nd percentile)

More weird 4D ultrasounds ... but Baby Wynne is just so cute!  Week 36

Week 36, 4D cute little face

A more traditional ultrasounds shot of the left side of the face and some little hands!
Apparently Baby Wynne has a full head of hair!!

Dr appt Week 33

Another visit with the perinatalogist.  We go to this specialist to get ultrasound measurements of Baby Wynne to be sure that the Gestational Diabetes (GD) is not affecting growth (some GD babies get too big, which can cause problems).

This is truthfully my favorite doctor to visit because we get to watch Baby Wynne on a big TV screen for 20-30 minutes while the ultrasound technician tries to get measurements of our stubborn baby (who doesn't like to turn at the correct angle for the majority of the measurements needed!).

I was also happy that Ryan was able to make it to this appointment and enjoy the show.  The techs always love when Ryan is there to ask questions!  And Ryan kept asking for photos so this tech printed out so many for us!

All is great with Baby Wynne!  Everything looked good and she/he is not too big yet.  The tech predicts that Baby Wynne will be a bit over 8lbs if she/he arrives full-term.  This is a bit larger than average, but totally what I expected given family history.  The doctor was happy with the measurements and with how I am managing my GD diet.

We go back for another appointment during Week 36 (which may be the last with the specialist before Baby Wynne shows up!).

MEASUREMENTS:
Baby's Heartrate: 150 bpm
Baby's Estimated Weight: 5lbs 4oz (60th percentile)
Side view ultrasound of Baby Wynne's face!  Week 33

Creepy 4D ultrasound of left eye and part of right hand (and umbilical cord?)

Creepy 4D ultrasound of left eye and part of right arm

Still a bit creepy, but cutest 4D sonogram of Baby Wynne, with cute left eye and cute little nose!

We are already so thankful!

Happy Thanksgiving from Baby Wynne!

Dr appt Week 30

The only perk of being diagnosed with gestational diabetes is getting to go for a few extra ultrasounds and seeing Baby Wynne!

Today I got to see Baby Wynne for quite a while as the tech tried to get lots of measurements (she was even nice enough to tell me to close my eyes so I wouldn't see if it was a boy or girl!).  It's fun just watching Baby Wynne as she/he dances around.

When it came to a photo, Baby Wynne wasn't really cooperating.  Apparently, he/she is head down, back out, and snuggled up tight!  (We sort of got an over-the-shoulder shot, below)

The best news is -- Baby Wynne is right on track!  Not measuring big at all yet (which is the fear with gestational diabetes and the point of the extra ultrasounds).  This is great!  And we'll keep on checking Baby Wynne to monitor growth.  Next ultrasound -- 3 weeks!

MEASUREMENTS:
Baby's Heartrate: 150 bpm
Baby's Estimated Weight: 3lbs 9oz (60th percentile)

A very "artsy" view of Baby Wynne.
Essentially, Baby Wynne is turned away and this is the view of the back of the head, looking over the left shoulder.
Baby Wynne was just being shy today!

Dr appt Week 20

Today we had our 20 week doctor's appointment.  Everything went well!

We met first with the nurse, then the PA (who actually managed to find Baby Wynne's heartbeat this time!)

We then had our 20-week ultrasound, which is also known as the anatomy scan.  The technician (and her student) took lots of measurements and looked for all the body parts to be sure Baby Wynne was growing well.  I didn't get to see the screen most of the time (as I basically just lay there), but Ryan got to see it all!  The tech pointed out many brain parts (which Ryan kept shouting out!), the skull, lips, nose, heart, diaphragm, stomach, bladder, kidneys, femurs, spine, belly size, and lots of other stuff!  The save the best for last -- the "sex parts".  BUT, we don't want to know the sex!!!!  And it seems Baby Wynne didn't want us to know either because she/he kept his/her legs closed the whole time!  I am sure the tech got a glimpse, but she didn't dawdle, despite Ryan trying to get a peek!

Baby Wynne was sleepy during the ultrasound and didn't do much but yawn and some thumb sucking.  If we have another ultrasound, I will have to try to do it later in the day when Baby Wynne is a bit more active!

And here are all the pictures for week 20!

Profile of Baby Wynne
You can see the right arm as he/she attempts to suck her/his thumb!

Yet another profile of Baby Wynne!

A (kind of creepy) view of Baby Wynne's face!
MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy's Weight Gain: +0.7 lbs (1.2 lbs total)
Daddy's Weight Gain: 5 lbs total
Baby's Heartrate: 137 bpm at first, then 148 bpm after being poked for a while
Baby's Estimated Weight: 15 oz. (55th percentile)

Dr appts Week 7, Week 12 and Week 16!

I plan to share the interesting information from our doctor's visits, and we've already had quite a few, so here's a summary of those first few weeks at the doctor's!

WEEK 7
Our first visit.  A new doctor, because my old doctor was near my work, which is 35 miles away and I plan to deliver at the nearby hospital, so I needed a nearby doctor.  This place is all women doctors, nurses, PAs, etc (not that I really care either way) and, of course, they are immediately taken with Ryan.  His effect on the ladies never ceases to amaze me!  I guess it is odd (in my neighborhood?) to have a very excited and attentive (and scientifically educated?) dad at the appointment.

Basically a bunch of paperwork, some peeing in some cups and a whole lot of vials of blood are collected.  Then we finally got to see Baby Wynne for the first time!  A blurry little ultrasound, but it was so cute!  With it's little heart beating!  The sonogram doesn't do it justice (see the left sidebar and our very first post).

Ryan and I are so excited and the conversation goes something like this (or at least this is how I remember it):
Ultrasound Tech: "That's your baby.  That flutter is the heart beat."
Ryan: "Oh, look, it is so cute.  Are those the armbuds? Are those bumps on the side the eyes? Is that the tail?"
Jen: "It looks like a chicken!"
Ultrasound Tech: [wide eyes; puzzled look]
(So sorry that, as a biology grad student TA, I have cut open a developing chicken egg and viewed a 3 day old chicken embryo!)

WEEK 7, Part 2: Nursing visit
Apparently it is standard to have a visit with just the nurse as a follow-up a few days/weeks after the initial appointment to go over blood work results and learn that drinking alcohol is bad for a developing baby.  Yet again, I think we shock the staff at the office.

(Again, all conversations are only as I remember them!)
Nurse: "Do you know your blood type?"
Jen: "AB+"
Nurse: [surprised tone] "umm, yes, you're right.  You are AB+.  Good job!"
Jen: [puzzled look]

a few minutes later ...

Nurse: "The blood work all looks good except for when it comes to german measles."
Ryan: "Oh, low antibody titers?  Can she get a booster at some point?"
Nurse: [shocked look]

After a long and tedious meeting, I get sent off for some more blood work and ultrasounds to check for genetic disorders and other not-so-good baby things.

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy Weight Gain: 0 lbs

WEEK 12:
A very busy day.  Two doctors visits.  One to my normal doctor and one to a special place that does super good ultrasounds to check for any issues.

The morning appointment to the normal doctor goes well.  Oh, except that the PA can't get a heartbeat using the little doppler thing.  Which is annoying (and sort of painful), but also awesome, because we get to do another ultrasound!  Here are some photos from that:

Again, the photos don't do it justice, but Baby Wynne was very excited to be seen!  There was dancing and a big wave at Daddy!  (It's a side view and the baby's head is to the left, obviously!)

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy Weight Gain: 0 lbs
Baby's Heart Beat: 150 bpm

The afternoon appointment was also fun!  Our ultrasound tech was super nice (and crazy ... glad to know her life story!)  but let us look at Baby Wynne for a long time!  And then she actually had to come back and take more pictures, so we got yet another chance to watch Baby Wynne!!  Yay!

Like I said, she was awesome and appreciated our nerdy scienceness.  We talked about the bones being ossified and what all the structures were that we were looking at and what exactly was going on.
I also learned 2 interesting things about this specific pregnancy:
(1) The egg came from my right ovary -- I know most mom's probably wouldn't care about this, but I thought it was cool that she could see the corpus luteum still in my ovary.
(2) The placenta is attached to the front of my uterus. -- This is one reason why finding the heartbeat is difficult with the little doppler thing.  This also makes ultrasounds interesting, because the go all around my belly.  Really high or really low is the only good way to get a good shot! (My bit of belly chub also doesn't help the situation)

Here are the awesome pictures:

Face
(Baby Wynne is now facing sideways, with the top of the head to the right)
Another side shot.  Definitely dancing again!

Here Baby Wynne is waving at you!  See the hand up near the top?

We also got the results of the first few tests for abnormalities and all is well!

WEEK 16
A pretty uneventful visit.  Ryan had to work, so I went alone.

Got back some more blood work we had done (serious number of tests for Baby Wynne!) and, again, all markers for abnormalities are negative, so it looks like Baby Wynne is doing great!

The doctor finally managed to get the heartbeat using the doppler thing.  It took a good 15 minutes and a lot of adjusting and a bunch of listening to my heartbeat (damn you, anterior placenta!), but she found it!  I was actually happy she found it and I didn't have to have an ultrasound because Ryan would have been so sad to have missed the chance to see Baby Wynne again!

MEASUREMENTS:
Mommy's Weight Gain: +0.5lbs
Baby's Heart Rate: 150 bpm

And that sums up all the first doctor appointments!

August 23, 2011

It's official!

The Wynne family is expecting!

Here's the first photo of Baby Wynne!  Taken at our 7-week appointment on May 27, 2011.

Baby is expected to arrive January 11, 2012 and we can't wait!!!
